Starting September 9, EnFin's default California product flips from PPA to LEASE.
Reason: a CA tax break (Utility User Tax exemption) that currently protects PPA payments is going away on 1/1/2027. Since a PPA is technically a sale of electricity, it'll become taxable — a LEASE is payment for the equipment instead, so it stays untaxed and keeps the homeowner's payment predictable.
What that means day to day:
You don't have to do anything manually — the EnFin options in Aurora have updated automatically. As of 9/9, PPA simply won't show up as an option for new CA deals; LEASE will be the only thing you see and quote. Just default to LEASE in your CA conversations and quoting going forward.
The one exception: three utility territories stay PPA-only and won't offer LEASE at all — Corona Department of Water & Power, Lathrop Irrigation District, and Redding Electric Utility (REU). Everywhere else in California moves to LEASE.
EnFin is still open across all CA utilities. And any PPA already signed before 9/9 stays valid and honored.*
- Enfin tech has identified a known issue with their Aurora integration since the product switch went live. PPAs are no longer available in Aurora, restricting our ability to process change orders and finalize projects for NTP without triggering a homeowner change order to a lease.
- The fix for this issue is expected to deploy sometime this week (9/14-9/18) and we are following up with Enfin daily until there is resolution.
